Dr. Jang-Moo Lee was appointed the 24th President of Seoul National University (SNU) effective July 20, 2006. President Lee has been a member of the Seoul National University faculty since 1976 and served as Dean of the College of Engineering from 1997 to 2002. He also recently served as Chairman of the Korean Council for University Education from April 2007 to March 2008.

Dr. Lee has served in senior positions in numerous national committees and institutions. From November 1998 to October 2000, he served as Chairman of the University Education Section Committee for the Educational Policy Council of the Korean Ministry of Education. During the same period, from 1998 to 1999, he was also a member of the National Presidential Advisory Committee on Science and Technology.

From June 1999 until June 2005, President Lee served as Chairman of the board of directors of the Industrial Technology Evaluation Institute under the Korean Ministry of Industry and Resources.

Apart from such prominent roles in the government, President Lee has held key positions in many professional associations and societies. From 1996 to 1999, he served as President of the Korean Society of Precision Engineering; from 1998 to 2000, he was President of the National Association of Deans of Engineering Colleges; and, also in 2000, he served as President of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers. Since November 2001, President Lee has been the Chairman of the Founding Committee for the National Science Museum; since 2004, he has served as President of the Korean Society for New and Renewable Energy.

President Lee is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; a fellow of the International Academy of Production Research; a fellow of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology; and a member of the Korean Academy of Engineering. President Lee has received prestigious awards from the National Academy of Sciences and the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers. After earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from SNU in 1967 and a Ph.D. Degree in Engineering Mechanics from lowa State University (ISU) in 1975, Dr. Lee began his academic career as a professor in the College of Engineering at SNU in July 1976.
