Movement to Change -- Internationalization and Undergraduate Studies |
|
Seoul National University is currently pursuing transformation. The key directions of transformation are focused on two areas: internationalization, and strengthening undergraduate studies.
Although the school administration is well aware that all of you are established scholars and are very busy conducting your own research, quality instruction is also a key priority of the
administration. And to this end, the school has recently established the Faculty of Liberal Education and sophisticated SNU's Basic Education system, strengthening fundamental studies for our undergraduates. The school is planning to reform its curriculum which will be finalized
around June 2008.
|
| Expanding English Courses |
|
SNU is also working to increase the number of courses lectured in English. Currently about
10% of our courses are instructed in English, more of which are graduate
courses than undergraduate courses. Starting from the spring semester of 2008, in order to provide incentives for more lectures provided in English, faculty are exempt from one class of
instructional responsibilities if they teach one class in English. It is highly advised that incoming faculty members prepare themselves for teaching classes in English.

See organization chart
SNU is comprised of 16 Colleges, 1 General Graduate School, and 6 Professional Graduate Schools. Our Graduate School of International Studies has a history of 10 years, and the School of Dentistry and the Graduate School of Business Administration (MBA) were established last year. The
Graduate School of Law is due to be established in 2009.
As a supporting organization, the Office of International Affairs handles issues concerning internationalization. Issues such as hosting and participating in international events, visa application and many more are all taken care of there. Please do not hesitate to seek assistance whenever needed.

| SNU Faculty |
|
SNU has about 2,500 full-time faculty members, of which 10 are foreigners in tenure-track
positions. SNU has 50 additional foreign professors who are Contractual Lecturers or Visiting Professors. The university is planning to increase that number by adding 100 more foreign
faculty in the near future.
|
| Number of Students |
|
The number of students at SNU is similar to that of the larger state universities in the United
States (for example, UC Berkeley).
|
| International Exchange |
|
Currently, SNU has around 500 international exchange programs, out of which 200 are student
exchange programs. On campus, there are around 2000 international students, out of which
approximately 1000 are studying for specific degrees, and the other 1000 are taking language courses.
|
| SNU Library System |
|
SNU Library holds around 3.3 million books. After much investment by the school, the SNU
library is comparable to those in the top 30 US universities.
|
| Scholarships at SNU |
|
Around 50% of all undergraduate and graduate students receive full or partial scholarships. We continue to increase the number of recipients through receiving funds from BK (Brain Korea Project) research grants.
|
| SNU Budget |
|
SNU budget revenues are originated from 4 areas: Government support, Tuition fees, the SNU Development Fund, and Research Grants. SNU receives 200 billion won from the Government, and the students collectively pay about 200 billion won a year. The SNU Development Fund is about 100 billion won in size, and Research Grants add up to 300 billion won annually. Total incoming resources to the SNU budget amount to 800 billion won. The Seoul National University Hospital is a separate legal organization, and its budget amounts to 700 billion won annually. SNU as a single entity
has a budget of 1,500 billion won per year, and faculty salaries are paid by the Government.
|
| Geographical Status |
|
SNU holds a vast area of land including the Gwanak and Yeongeon Campuses, and the University Forests.
Recent construction of additional buildings has increased dramatically and the Gwanak
campus now holds around 200 buildings. Upon establishment of the planned International
Campus, SNU will be home to an even larger campus.
