Welcome to Seoul National University! |
|
It is a pleasure to provide incoming faculty members with key information on the school¡¯s personnel management policy and the major responsibilities of our faculty. If there are further
inquiries on subject matter not discussed today, please relay your additional questions to your respective department¡¯s administration office.

|
Seoul National University is currently pursuing transformation. The key directions of transformation are focused on two areas: internationalization, and strengthening undergraduate studies.
Although the school administration is well aware that all of you are established scholars and are very busy conducting your own research, quality instruction is also a key priority of the
administration. And to this end, the school has recently established the Faculty of Liberal Education and sophisticated SNU's Basic Education system, thereby strengthening fundamental studies for our undergraduates. The school is planning to reform its curriculum, which will be finalized
around June 2008.
|
| Teaching Responsibilities |
|
SNU is a national university, and therefore its faculty are also endowed responsibilities of
government officials. This means that faculty members are subject to teaching
responsibilities of 9 hours (3 classes) per week, according to the Higher Education Ordinance. However, of the 3 required classes, dissertation oversight for graduate students is counted as 1 class. Realistically speaking, faculty are only responsible for a minimum of two lecture classes every semester. In other words, your instructional requirements at SNU are 4 classes per year.
|
| Official Travel Overseas |
|
Civil servants are also subject to the Prohibition of Absence without Leave Policy. According to this policy, unreported travel overseas will be recognized and penalized as Absence without Leave. The Korean immigration system is computerized and any travel overseas is notified directly to the School.
SNU faculty are allowed a maximum of 14 days of travel overseas during semesters. The
14-day rule might seem too strict, but those 14 days are business days only. That means your stay
over the weekend will not be taken into account. The Medical School employs a 21-day rule.
Also, if the administration acknowledges a particular need to go abroad, they will approve an extended stay overseas. Given these exceptions to the restriction policy, faculty really do enjoy a significant degree of flexibility for overseas travel.
|
| Guarantee of Status |
|
As civil servants, SNU faculty members cannot be suspended or expelled from their position for reasons not stipulated in the relevant regulations. Examples of such reasons which are
grounds for dismissal include being legally incompetent or guilty of criminal charges. SNU
faculty are permitted to take a Leave of Absence upon their nomination to public service,
such as being elected as a National Assembly Member.

| Contract Renewal/Promotion |
|
According to School regulations, it is required that you renew your contract before your
promotion. Assistant Professors begin with a 3-year contract and Associate Professors with a
4-year contract. However, assistant professors must work as an assistant professor for
4 years before they are eligible for promotion. This means that an assistant professor must
work 3 years under the initial contract, and another 1 year under a renewed contract in order to be
eligible for promotion evaluation. The Promotion Evaluation process has higher standards
than the Contract Renewal process. A candidate must score more than 70 points in order to be qualified for contract renewal, and 80 points for promotion. The table below outlines the specific scoring standards. Each department and school has additional standards not outlined here.

The faculty handbook specifies Acknowledged Research Products (pg. 40). If you take a look there, SNU acknowledges incoming faculty¡¯s instructional experience at their former schools. However, any research conducted previously is not taken into account in the promotion evaluation process.
Faculty members are eligible for one contract renewal. If a candidate fails to pass the
process, he/she must leave the school. Contract renewal and promotion evaluation are all
conducted by each school¡¯s Promotion and Tenure Committee.
|
| Tenure Guarantee |
|
If a faculty member is promoted to the position of Professor, he or she is guaranteed tenure until retirement. Tenure evaluation is also extended to associate professors. There are no
monetary benefits for associate professors with full tenure, although it is definitely a great
honor to the recipients.
About 10% of all associate professors are granted tenure. Currently, many faculty from the
Natural and Technological Schools are applying for associate professor tenure, while faculty from the Liberal Arts and Social Sciences are not. If one does not pass the tenure evaluation as an
associate professor, one is eligible to apply after 3 years or upon their promotion to professor.
Exceptional faculty members are appointed as Distinguished Professors, and are provided full tenure. SNU is employing a more flexible tenure track system.
|
| Salary |
|
The salaries SNU faculty members receive are the highest among those offered by other national universities. |
| Disciplinary Action |
|
Being civil servants, even the most minor legal offense by SNU faculty members are notified to the School. |
| Long-term Overseas Research |
|
SNU faculty members are eligible for long-term leave in the forms of dispatch, research study,
and overseas research. Beginning at 3 years after appointment, faculty may leave for
overseas research, and after 7 years, faculty are permitted to take sabbatical leave. However,
each department cannot have more than one-seventh of its faculty on leave for long-term overseas
research at a time, therefore members in smaller departments should keep this in mind.
