Faculty positions at SNU are divided into various categories. Roughly speaking, they are differentiated by the availability of tenure. To be more specific, faculty on tenure track include: Professors (Á¤±³¼ö), Associate Professors (ºÎ±³¼ö), Assistant Professors (Á¶±³¼ö), and Full-Time Lecturers (ÀüÀÓ°»ç). Initial employment of tenure-track faculty begins with a full-time lecturer or assistant professor position. Promotion to associate professor and professor positions are carried out in accordance with pertinent rules and regulations, as stipulated in the pages to come.

    Qualifications of Tenure-Track Faculty
    A. Tenure-track faculty must fulfill the following requirements:
      i. Doctorate Degree.
ii. Any status or achievements equivalent to a doctorate degree.
    B. Specific evaluation of the abovementioned status will be conducted by the Promotion and Tenure Committee and determined by the president.
    Contract and Appointment
    A. Length of Appointment
      i. Professor: Until retirement as stipulated in Section 47 of the Educational Officials¡¯ Law; unless the candidate chooses a contract limited to 6 years upon appointment. Once guaranteed retirement, however, the candidate cannot change to a short-term contract.
ii. Associate Professor: Up to 6 years. Candidates may be given full tenure if they have achieved academic excellence.
iii. Assistant Professor: Up to 4 years
iv. Full-Time Lecturers: Up to 2 years
    B. Wages are paid in accordance with the ¡°Government Officials¡¯ Wage Regulations¡± and bonuses in accordance with the ¡°Government Officials¡¯ Bonus Regulations¡±. Additional payments can also be provided in exceptional cases.
    C. Promotion process of Tenure-Track Faculty is as specified in Chapter 4.
    D. Upon violations to the contract, the School may request compensation.
    E. Specific contract conditions, in accordance with the ¡°Educational Officials Appointment Ordinance¡±, are determined by the Promotion and Tenure Committee.

Non tenure-track faculty positions are a little more complicated as they reflect the various channels of funding.
They are: Endowed Professor (±â±Ý±³¼ö), BK Professor (BK±³¼ö), Visiting Professor (Ãʺù±³¼ö), Contracted Full-Time Lecturer (°è¾àÁ¦ÀüÀÓ´ë¿ì±³¼ö), Research Professor (ÀüÀÓ´ë¿ì¿¬±¸±³¼ö), and Professor Emeritus (¸í¿¹±³¼ö).

    Endowed Professor
    A. SNU has employed endowed professors since 1995. Unlike tenure-track faculty who receive their basic salary from the national treasury, endowed professors are paid from a fund of various endowments to the school. Benefits other than salaries endowed professors should enjoy are, in principle, concurrent to the standards of an average Korean government official of education. In principle, initial employment of endowed professors begins with a full-time lecturer or assistant professor position.
    BK Professor
    A. BK professors are paid by the Ministry of Education via the ¡°Brain Korea 21 Project¡± Funds. Their functions and benefits are similar to endowed professors.
    Visiting Professor
    A. Visiting professors are faculty who are originally from domestic organizations outside of SNU (i.e. Governmental Organizations, Research Organizations, Public Organizations, Private Firms, etc). or who are foreigners. Visiting professors are usually contracted for a semester or for a year, and receive facilities and supplies needed for lectures and research.
    Contracted Full-Time Lecturer
    A. Contracted Full-Time Lecturers are affiliated with the Faculty of Liberal Education, and although they are non-tenure track, receive similar benefits tenure-track faculty enjoy.
    Research Professor
    A. Research Professors are researchers who take part in specific academic projects. Such faculty are assigned to various research institutes at SNU. They are able to concentrate on research and receive similar benefits as full-time lecturers.
