SNU Tenure-Track Faculty and Teaching Assistant Appointment
Regulations

| Chapter 1: General |
Article 1 (Objective)
Article 2 (Qualifications of Tenure-Track Faculty) |
| 1. Tenure-Track Faculty must fulfill the following requirements: |
A. Doctorate Degree.
B. Any status or achievements equivalent to a doctorate degree. |
| 2. Specific evaluation of status under 1. B will be conducted by the Promotion and Tenure Committee and determined by the President. |

Article 3 (Contract and Appointment) |
| 1. Length of Appointment |
A. Professor: Until retirement as stipulated in Section 47, of the Educational Officials¡¯ Law; unless the candidate chooses a contract limited to 6 years upon appointment. Once guaranteed retirement, however, the candidate cannot change to a short-term contract.
B. Associate Professor: Up to 6 years.
Candidates may be given full tenure if they have achieved academic excellence.
C. Assistant Professor: Up to 4 years
D. Full-Time Lecturer: Up to 2 years¡¯ |
2. Wages are paid in accordance with the ¡°Government Officials¡¯ Wage Regulations¡± and bonuses in accordance with the ¡°Government Officials¡¯ Bonus Regulations¡±. Additional payments can also be provided in exceptional cases.
3. The promotion process for Tenure-Track Faculty is as specified in Chapter 4.
4. Upon violations to the contract, the School may request compensation.
5. Specific contract conditions, in accordance with the ¡°Educational Officials Appointment Ordinance¡±, are determined by the Promotion and Tenure Committee. **Appendix 1

| Chapter 2 : Initial Appointment |

|
In principle, initial appointment for Tenure-Track Faculty takes place twice a year, within 1 month prior to the commencement of a new semester. |

Article 6 (Percentage of Initial Appointments) |

Article 8 (Minimum Required Years of Experience before Initial Appointment) |
|
The minimum required years of educational or research experience for initial appointees for
their respective positions are as follows, with exceptions for appointees with extraordinary achievements.
|
1. Professor: 14 years
2. Associate Professor: 9 years
3. Assistant Professor: 5 years
4. Full-Time Lecturer: 3 years

Article 9 (Initial Appointment Process) |
|
1. The appointment procedure includes the announcement, application reception, evaluation, selection, and notification stages. |
|
Article 10 (Application Evaluation) |
|
1. Evaluation criteria for candidates are the following: |
A. Basic and Subject Evaluation
i. Suitability of candidate¡¯s field of expertise to available positions
ii. Research products of last 3 years
iii. Overall research achievements
|
B. Interview
i. Open presentation or open lecture
ii. Personal statement and instruction or research plan
iii. Appointment suitability
|
|
2. Specific standards, weights, methods, etc. for the above evaluation criteria are evaluated by the Promotion and Tenure Committee and finalized by the dean of each school. |

Article 11 (Application Evaluators) |

Article 12 (Research Product Evaluation) |
|
The candidate¡¯s research products will be given a grade among ¡°¼ö¡± (5 points), ¡°¿ì¡± (4 points), ¡°¹Ì¡± (3 points), ¡°¾ç¡± (2points), and ¡°°¡¡± (1 point), by 5 evaluators. The final grade is determined by neglecting the highest and lowest grades and calculating the average of the remaining 3 grades. |

Article 13 (Acceptable Research Products and Conversion Rates) |
|
1. Acceptable research products pertinent to the candidate¡¯s field of expertise include the following: |
A. Published books
B. Published translations
C. Papers published in academic periodicals or collections
D. Achievements such as presentations, exhibitions, or selections (Fine Arts and Physical Education candidates)
E. Other achievements (designs, projects)
F. Compilations, editions, master¡¯s thesis or dissertation (requires approval from Promotion and Tenure Committee)

2. Specifics and possible disputes regarding the above criteria will be determined and mediated by the Promotion and Tenure Committee. |
|
3. The conversion rates for research products are as follows. However, if the candidate is the first author of a joint study or a correspondent author, then the candidate is eligible for 70 points. |
A. Independent Study: 100 points
B. 2 coauthors: 70 points
C. 3 coauthors: 50 points
D. 4 coauthors or more: 30 points

4. Point conversion for performance in the fine arts or physical education is as stipulated in Appendix 2. |
|
Article 14 |
|
1. The candidate must submit his or her last 3 years of research products equivalent to
200 to 400 points. However, if needed, the dean of the respective school may shorten the required time frame and increase the required points, after consultation with the Promotion and Tenure Committee.

| Chapter 3 : Contract Renewal |
|
Article 16 (Contract Renewal) |
|
The term Contract Renewal refers to contracts that sustain previous contract conditions. |
|
Article 17 (Time of Contract Renewal) |
|
Contract Renewals for Tenure-Track Faculty take place twice a year, on March 1st and September 1st. |
|
Article 18 (Contract Renewal Standards and Procedure) |
1. Tenure-Track Faculty, upon termination of appointment as stipulated in Article 3, are
eligible for one contract renewal after evaluation and assessment by the Promotion and
Tenure Committee.
2. The Dean should notify the contract renewal status to Tenure-Track Faculty approaching
the end of their contract.
3. If the Dean should find the candidate¡¯s status insufficient to meet renewal standards, the Dean should provide the candidate a chance to explain.
4. If the Promotion and Tenure Committee should find the candidate¡¯s evaluation insufficient to meet renewal standards, it should provide the candidate a chance to explain.
5. Upon the Promotion and Tenure Committee¡¯s decision not to renew a contract, the President should notify the candidate 2 months in advance of the termination of contract, clearly stating the reasons.
6. If the candidate wishes to object to the rejection of renewal, the candidate may file a petition with the Faculty Petition Evaluation Board within 30 days of rejection notification.

Article 19 (Contract Renewal Evaluation) |
|
1. Candidates for contract renewal are subject to the following evaluation criteria. |
A. Research products, and academic or creative activities in the candidate¡¯s specialty
B. Instructional abilities and achievements
C. Service
D. Other achievements (Commendations, decorations, citations, etc.)
E. Conformity to Educational Laws, and dignity as a Tenure-Track Faculty Member

2. Evaluation of research products will be conducted as stipulated in Articles 11 and 13.
3. Specific standards, weights, methods, etc. for the above evaluation criteria are evaluated by the by the Promotion and Tenure Committee and finalized by the dean of each school.

Article 20 (Acknowledged Duration and Number of Research Products) |
|
Contracts limited to 2 years require 100 points including one paper published in an academic journal written either as an independent study, as a first author of a joint study, or as a correspondent author. Contracts for between 2 and 4 years require 200 points including two papers, and for contracts for 4 to 6 years, 300 points including three papers. However, if the candidate has exhibited exceptional academic achievement, the candidate is exempt from
the above requirements upon review by the Promotion and Tenure Committee.

Specific regulations regarding contract renewal procedures are evaluated by the Promotion and Tenure Committee, and determined by the President. |
| Chapter 4 : Promotion |
|
Article 21 (Time of Promotion) |
|
Tenure-Track Faculty promotion takes place twice a year, on April 1st and October 1st. |

Article 22 (Promotion and Appointment) |
|
Article 23 (Required Time before Promotion) |
1. Required time before promotion for each title is as stipulated in Appendix 3.
2. Acknowledged instructional experiences are restricted to full-time lectures at a 4-year college. For candidates in the fields of the fine arts and physical education, instructional experience at an institute equivalent to a 4-year college is required.
3. Acknowledged institutions referred to in (2) are determined independently.

Article 24 (Promotion Evaluation) |
1. Evaluation criteria for promotion candidates are as stipulated in Articles 11, 13, and 19. Three evaluators will take part in the evaluation, one of which shall be a non-SNU faculty member. Final evaluation is the averages of the grades given by the 3 evaluators.
2. Specific regulations not specified in the above (1) will be determined by the President.

|
Specific regulations regarding promotion procedures are evaluated by the Promotion and Tenure Committee, and determined by the President. |
| Chapter 5 : Tenure |
|
Article 26 (Restriction on the Number of Tenured Faculty) |
|
The number of tenured faculty cannot exceed 90 percent of the total number of Tenure-Track Faculty. |

Article 27 (Time of Appointment for Tenured Assistant Professors) |

Article 28 (Appointment of Tenured Faculty) |
1. Professors are appointed until retirement as stipulated in Section 47 of the Educational Officials¡¯ Law; unless the candidate chooses a short-term contract upon appointment.
2. In principle, associate professors are not eligible for tenure. However, in exceptional
cases and when the candidate fulfills all requirements and passes evaluation by the Tenure Appointment Board, the candidate may be appointed until retirement as stipulated in Section 47 of the Educational Officials¡¯ Law.
3. The organization and employment of the Tenure Appointment Board will be determined independently.
