  • Contract Renewal

Contract renewal and promotion issues tend to go hand in hand. If a faculty member is either an assistant professor, associate professor, or an endowed professor, then usually the duration of contract is 3 years. As it takes 4 years of instructional experience for assistant professors to be promoted to associate professors, they are subject to one contract renewal before their promotion evaluation. In such cases, research products acknowledged in the contract renewal process can also be acknowledged in the promotion evaluation process.

Usually promotion evaluation is a more difficult process than the contract renewal. In a promotion evaluation, the number of points needed to pass is 80 points; while for contract renewal, 70 points.

The guidelines stated below are contract renewal and promotion standards according to SNU¡¯s Administration. Each college may require standards a little higher.

Contract renewal is restricted to one time only. If you do not receive a contract renewal offer, that means you are dismissed as a SNU faculty member. Of course, you may file a petition against your dismissal.

    Duration of Appointment
    1. Associate Professor: Up to 6 years. However, if the candidate has exhibited exceptional achievements in education and academia, then the candidate is guaranteed a tenure contract.
    2. Assistant Professor: Up to 4 years
    3. Full-Time Lecturer: Up to 2 years
    Contract Renewal Evaluation
    1. Candidates for contract renewal are subject to the following evaluation criteria.
    A. Research products, and academic or creative activities in the candidate¡¯s specialty
    B. Instructional abilities and achievements
    C. Service
    D. Other achievements (Commendations, decorations, citations, etc.)
    E. Conformity to Educational Laws, and dignity as a Tenure-Track Faculty Member

    2. Evaluation of research products will be conducted as stipulated in Articles 11 and 13 of SNU¡¯s Tenure-Track Faculty and Teaching Assistant Appointment Regulations.

    3. Specific standards, weights, methods, etc. for the above evaluation criteria are evaluated by the Promotion and Tenure Committee and finalized by the dean of each school.

Acknowledged Duration and Number of Research Products
    1. Evaluation of candidates is based on the criteria below. The candidate must receive a total of 70 points or more in order to be eligible for contract renewal.

    A. Evaluation criteria are: educational activities (40), research activities (40), service activities (10), and Dean¡¯s assessment (10). Additional points (5) are awarded depending on various awards and commendations. This adds up to a total of 105 points.
    B. Educational Activities (40) are evaluated based on: class responsibilities, degree facilitation, and class assessment, according to the table in Appendix 2. Specific evaluation and evaluation criteria may be adjusted by each school¡¯s Promotion and Tenure Committee
    C. Research Activities (40) are evaluated based on: Designated Research Products (20), Overall Research Products (15), and Other Research Activities (15), according to the table in Appendix 3. ¡°Other Research Activities¡± refers to assigned research tasks, industry-academic cooperative research, etc. Specific evaluation of Overall Research Products and Other Research Activities will be conducted by each school¡¯s Promotion and Tenure Committee.
    D. Service Activities (10) are evaluated based on: on-campus activities, institutional activities, government services (advisory positions, judges, delegation member, etc.), and community service, according to the table in Appendix 4. Specific evaluation and evaluation criteria may be adjusted by each school¡¯s Promotion and Tenure Committee.
    E. Dean¡¯s Assessment (10) is conducted by the dean/associate dean of each school or department, according to the criteria specified in the table in Appendix 5.

    2. Research Products Evaluation
    A. The candidate¡¯s research products will be given a grade among ¡°¼ö¡± (5 points), ¡°¿ì¡± (4 points), ¡°¹Ì¡± (3 points), ¡°¾ç¡± (2points), and ¡°°¡¡± (1 point), by 5 evaluators. The final grade is determined by neglecting the highest and lowest grades and calculating the average of the remaining 3 grades.
    3. Acceptable Research Products and Conversion Rates
    A. Acceptable research products pertinent to the candidate¡¯s field of expertise include the following.
      i. Published books
      ii. Published translations
iii. Papers published in academic periodicals or collections
iv. Achievements such as presentations, exhibitions, or selections (Fine Arts and Physical Education candidates)
      v. Other achievements (designs, projects)
vi. Compilations, editions, master¡®s thesis or dissertation (requires approval from Promotion and Tenure Committee)
    B. Specifics and possible disputes regarding the above criteria will be determined and mediated by the Promotion and Tenure Committee.
    C. The conversion rate for research products are as follows. However, if the candidate is the first author of a joint study or a correspondent author, then the candidate is eligible for 70 points.
      i. Independent Study: 100 points
      ii. 2 coauthors: 70 points
      iii. 3 coauthors: 50 points
iv. 4 coauthors or more: 30 points
    D. Point conversion for practice in the fields of the fine arts or physical education is as stipulated in Appendix 2.
    4. Contracts limited to 2 years require 100 points including one paper published in an academic journal written either as an independent study, as a first author of a joint study, or as a correspondent author. Contracts for 2 and 4 years require 200 points including two papers, and for contracts for 4 to 6 years, 300 points including three papers. However, if the candidate has exhibited exceptional academic achievement, the candidate is exempt from the above requirements upon review by the Promotion and Tenure Committee.
Note on Guidelines on Research Products.

Acknowledged research products are restricted to research conducted during a faculty member¡¯s employment at SNU. For example, SNU promotion evaluation recognizes a faculty member¡¯s teaching experience from schools other than SNU. Let¡¯s assume you were an Assistant Professor at another school for many years, and came to SNU as an Assistant Professor. In your evaluation process for promotion to Associate Professor, your instructional experience at the other school is recognized. However, the recognized years of instruction at another school cannot exceed your total years of teaching at SNU. For example, the required instructional experience for promotion to Associate Professor is 4 years. If your time at SNU as an Assistant Professor has been 2 years in total, then only 2 out of your many years at the other school will be recognized as instructional experience. The recognized research products, however, will be restricted to products you have completed during your 2-year period of employment at SNU.
