    Conditions for Leave of Absence

    According to Section 44 of the Educational Officials¡¯ Law, Leave of Absence is approved for faculty who meet any of the criteria below. Faculty who qualify based on items 1 to 4 and 11 are subject to mandatory Leave of Absence regardless of his or her choice. Faculty who qualify based on item 7, will receive approval to take leave only upon the faculty member¡¯s request.

    1. Requiring the need for long-term medical treatment due to physical or mental disability.

    2. Drafted or summoned to military service according to the Military Service Law.

    3. When life/death or whereabouts of a faculty member is uncertain due to natural disaster or wartime turmoil.

    4. Subject to other responsibilities outlined by law

    5. Studying or engaging in research overseas for over a year.

    6. Temporary employment with international organizations, foreign organizations, or educational institutions for Koreans overseas.

    7. Leave of Absence to raise children under the age of one. Female faculty are entitled to Leave of Absence upon pregnancy or childbirth.

    8. Study and training in institutions designated by the Minister of Education and Human Resources Development.

    9. Long-term nursing for immediate family including: parents, spouse, children, or spouse¡¯s parents.

    10. Spouse¡¯s employment overseas or under his or her condition under item 5.

    11. Upon employment as a full-time Union leader.
    Duration of Leave of Absence
    1. Item 1: 1 year

    2. Items 2, 4: Until termination of required service

    3. Item 3: 3 months

    4. Item 5: 3 years. May be extended an additional 3 years if degree is pursued.

    5. Item 6: Until termination of employment

    6. Item 7: 1 year. Female faculty may extend leave to 2 years.

    7. Item 8: 3 years

    8. Item 9. 1 year. Total Leave of Absence period under this condition is restricted to 3 years.

    9. Item 10: 3 years. May be extended an additional 3 years. Total Leave of Absence period cannot exceed spouse¡¯s employment duration.

    10. Item 11: Upon termination of responsibility.
    Effects of Leave of Absence
    1. Faculty on Leave of Absence retain their title, but do not have any duties.
    2. When conditions for Leave of Absence cease to exist, faculty must report back to the University within 30 days. The employer must immediately issue an order of return.

    3. Faculty returning within 30 days of expiration of Leave of Absence will return to their previous position without any penalty.

    4. Faculty not returning within 30 days of expiration of Leave of Absence are subject to dismissal from office by the employer¡¯s authority.
    Status during Leave of Absence
    1. Faculty have no duties while on Leave of Absence, and therefore are not eligible for promotion or advancement. Likewise, time spent on Leave of Absence will not be included in recognized instructional experience or acknowledged in the promotion evaluation process.

    2. Leave of Absence for medical reasons or obscurity may not exceed the length of appointment, and therefore its duration must be within the duration of contract.

    3. The duration of Leave of Absence for non-medical or obscurity reasons will not be added to the length of appointment.
    Wages during Leave of Absence
    1. During Leave of Absence for medical reasons, faculty will receive 70% of their normal wages. During Leave of Absence for tuberculosis, faculty will receive 80% of their normal wages. If such medical reasons are caused by the faculty member¡¯s duties, the faculty member will receive full wages during Leave of Absence.

    2. During Leave of Absence for study overseas, faculty will receive 50% of their normal wages.

    3. During Leave of Absence based on other reasons not stipulated above, faculty will not receive any wages.

    4. Regular research grants are not provided during Leave of Absence. However, during Leave of Absence for medical reasons, faculty will receive all normal research grants.

    5. National research funds are not provided during Leave of Absence. However, during Leave of Absence for medical reasons, faculty will receive all normal research grants.
