Graduate Scholarship for Excellent Foreign Students (GSFS)

GSFS is offered to graduates from universities in East, Southeast, and Central Asia to help them continue their studies at SNU. 1 to 4 students from various colleges of SNU, for a total number of 20 graduates every year, are selected. Recipients are exempted from paying tuition for 2 to 6 academic years, and accommodation (in the Gwanak campus dormitory) is optional. Award decisions are based on the applicants¡¯ academic achievements and potential, as well as their personal accomplishments. Records of past studies, a study plan, personal statement, and letters of recommendation and other achievement records, as well as specific qualifications such as language proficiency, are all taken into consideration. The appropriateness of an applicant¡¯s academic goals and suitability of preparation for the proposed program of studies are also assessed. Interviews, examinations, and/or additional documents may be required from the applicant. The Office of International Affairs (OIA) will assist the application and registration procedure.

Korean Government Scholarship

The Ministry of Education offers a scholarship program for international students from countries that have concluded a bilateral cultural agreement with Korea. The applicant must be a citizen of a country to which the scholarship is offered. Graduate or research applicants must have, or must be expecting to receive, a Bachelor's Degree and Doctorate applicants must have, or must be expecting to receive, a Master's Degree, prior to August 31 in the year of application. Academic grades from the last educational institute attended must be within the top 20%, and applicants must possess a good command of Korean or English. The scholarship covers the cost of airfare, living expenses, tuition fees, a research allowance, language training expenses and medical insurance.
The application procedure is as follows. First, Korean diplomatic or consular missions abroad make a preliminary selection of applicants based upon the recommendations of the government of the country to which the scholarship is allocated. Once the preliminary selection is made, the Korean mission abroad recommends the selected candidates to the National Institute for International Education Development (NIIED) via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Next, the scholarship review committee of the NIIED selects the finalists and notifies the Korean embassy via the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the selection of the candidates, and then, as the final step in the official procedure, the Korean embassy sends an award letter (confirmation of acceptance) to each recipient.
