SNU Experiences
My name is Fabien SENEZ, and I am from Limoges, France.

I arrived in South Korea in August 2006 to study at Seoul National University. In March 2007, I entered SNU and am currently a graduate student in the doctoral program of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Before arriving in Korea I knew very little about Korea as a country and even fewer things about the Korean language. I knew a few basic expressions and knew Hangeul but it was not nearly enough for even the bare basics, so I decided the first thing I would do upon arrival was enroll in a Korean language course to get to know the language.

So during my first six months in Korea I learned Korean. I tried to expand my vocabulary and learn more useful expressions that I would be able to use in everyday life. But, Korean vocabulary is difficult to remember, and easy to forget, and unfortunately my Korean language skill is quite poor, but I can understand a few things and manage daily life in Korea.

The first big difference between French universities and Korean universities is the organisation. The Korean university model is a reflection of the American model, so the class system, grades, diplomas and everything is different from the French model. Also, each college is divided into departments, and my department is in turn divided into laboratories, and each laboratory is directed by a professor.

The campus of Seoul National University is located between mountains, far from the centre of Seoul, and it provides excellent conditions for studies and research. And although the campus is a vast expansion of land, thanks to the frequent shuttle buses, it is possible to get around the campus easily.

SNU has tried to make itself accessible to foreign students, and in fact it is quite a comfortable place for us; but it is strongly recommended to know the basics of the Korean language before arriving at SNU. Indeed, most of the administrative documents, such as lecture registration, are only in Korean. But textbooks are usually written in English so it is possible to cope with lessons, even if it is difficult. Anyway, if anything goes wrong, Korean students are always ready to help foreign students so it is possible to rely on them.

Finally, studying at SNU is a startling experience. Even more than in South Korea at large, living the life of a Korean student is a rewarding adventure. During the year I have spent at SNU I met numerous interesting people not only from Korea but also from various countries across the globe. I have studied hard and have had bad times with work but I have also experienced very delightful and exhilarating moments. SNU is a recommended experience.
