SNU College English Program is holding a series of workshops for learning English writing as below.

Common Mistakes in Academic English Writing

The purpose of this workshop is to inform students about mistakes commonly made by Korean college students in English writing so that they can avoid these mistakes and improve their writing skills. In this workshop, students will learn about

1. some grammar errors that are often made by Korean students;
2. adequate and inadequate styles for college writing; and
3. other tips to produce better academic writings.

The level of the workshop is adequate for CE1 and CE2 students. However, any student with no experience of academic writing may benefit from this workshop.

Writing Emails and Business Letters in English

Although it sounds simple, writing emails and letters in another language can be challenging. This workshop will uncover the mystery of writing clear, concise, and polite emails in English. You'll find out how to format and organize your emails and letters, including proper subject lines, greetings, closings, and how to write a friendly message without being considered rude. Join this workshop to feel more confident in your English writing skills!

Building Presentation Skills

Participants will learn about and practice four key elements of presentations that can be adapted and applied to many styles or disciplines. At the end of each session, participants will have the opportunity to work independently or in pairs (with input from the instructor) on a project related to the day’s topic.

English Pronunciation

Students will learn the proper pronunciation of English while learning to naturalize their speech. The differences in pronunciation between the Korean language and the English language will also be discussed to make it easier for students to understand.

Modifiers and Reporting Verbs

Many Korean students, even at advanced levels, often make mistakes in using modifiers and reporting verbs. However, modifiers and reporting verbs play a central role in English, adding more meaning to the main idea or showing clarity in the meaning. In this workshop, the instructor will first explain modifiers and types of reporting verbs with examples. Then, participants, in pair or group, will practice writing various sentences using modifiers and reporting verbs. This workshop is intended for intermediate levels.

Academic Writing in English in the Humanities

This workshop is designed to help undergrad students successfully complete writing assignments in the humanities. First, the workshop will briefly discuss the purpose and the types of writing in the humanities. Then the workshop will more particularly discuss how to use what kind of evidence, how to structure the argument, and how to use proper writing and documentation styles.

Most Common Grammar Errors

Speed Grammar “Few assignments” but “less homework,” “everyday chores” but “chores every day,” “I like to do” but not “I enjoy to do,” “I used to work,” but “I’m used to working” – if you’ve ever thought that English grammar is hard, this workshop is for you. This one time two-hour grammar workshop will cover 5-minute segments of 20 of the most common and most confusing grammar errors. Through brief lessons and practice, you will walk away a bit more confident about and a bit more proficient in the small grammar mistakes that constantly trip you up.
