[RESEARCH] According to Professor SEO Jeong-Sun of the Genomic Medicine Institute of SNU, it will soon be possible to prevent and cure diseases by analyzing the human genome. The cost of genome analysis is constantly dropping and is expected to reach 1 million KRW (currently 10 million KRW) in three years, making it affordable for more and more people. Professor SEO also emphasized the importance of relative legal and security measures that should be taken in advance of utilizing the human genome.

[LEGAL ISSUES] SNU Hospital (SNUH) decided to drop the case against the parents of an extremely low birth-weight infant, who were reluctant to give their consent for the baby to undergo surgery. SNUH had earlier filed an injunction against the parents not to interfere with performing the surgery, saying the action was equivalent to infringing upon the baby’s right to live. The withdrawal of the case was determined after the parents promised to cooperate with the remaining medical treatment procedures.
