[Interview] SNU graduate (French Literature major) and novelist Ms. SON Jang Soon was interviewed by Chosun Ilbo about her donation of 2 billion KRW to SNU. The interview mainly focused on explaining why she decided to make the donation and her life story as a sensational novelist of the 1970s. Son said that she lived as a thrifty person to keep the motivation of a poor, young writer but decided to make the donation when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November 2009. SNU has announced that it will establish a literary research fund named after Ms. Son with her donation.

[Figures] Professor AHN Cheol Soo of SNU's Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology (GSCST) was introduced in Hankyoreh Shinmun. Despite his participation in the recent mayoral election of Seoul and continuing invitations from the political circle, the article said that Professor Ahn was currently concentrating on stabilizing and reforming GSCST. Ahn will be lecturing the course 'The Entrepreneurial Way of Thinking' to students of the School in the first semester of 2012 and is working on reorganizing the structure of departments at GSCST to achieve the goal of reform. The article mentioned that, considering his current work as the dean of GSCST, Ahn would not be participating in any political activities until next year at the earliest, at least not directly.

[Figures] Professor PARK Jae Gahb of SNU's College of Medicine was introduced in Kyunghyang Shinmun. The article focused on Professor Park's appeal against the plan of the Seoul metropolitan government to set up smoking zones in non-smoking parks. Professor Park asserted that setting up smoking zones in non-smoking parks should not be allowed because it violated the principle to prevent exposure to secondhand smoke. His effort succeeded in persuading the new mayor-elect Mr. PARK Won Soon and the Seoul metropolitan government decided to hold back the plan which was announced on October 18.

[Interview] Professor Emeritus KIM Yoon Beom of the University of Chicago School of Medicine (class of '58, SNU College of Medicine) had an interview with JoongAng Ilbo. The article mainly focused on his development of aseptic pigs which were used in the recent research on developing a cure for diabetes led by Professor PARK Seong Hoe of SNU's College of Medicine. Professor Kim created the aseptic pig by using the fact that immune cells of a mother pig are not passed onto its fetus because of its thick placenta. The aseptic pig he developed is a 'miniature pig', which is about the same weight of a human being and is optimal for organ transplantation to humans. Having distributed the creation resultant of his 40 years of research for free, Kim said that he was proud to know that his aseptic pig contributed to the on-going development of a cure for diabetes.
