    The Korean Education System

    The Korean education system is composed of 6 years of elementary school, 3 years of middle school and 3 years of high school. The first 9 years of schooling are mandatory by Korean law, while further education is optional. The Korean education system was dubbed to be the most efficient system according to research done by UNICEF on 26th Nov. 2002. However, the system exhibits problems as well, as competition amongst students is ever so high.

    Foreign Schools

    Domestic schools, however, are not appropriate for foreign students as all classes (maybe with the exception of English) are conducted in Korean. For students transferring into Korea, numerous international schools are available in the Seoul area. The tuition information is provided below.

    Tuition Information
    Pre-School Approx. KRW 11,830,000 plus USD 5,330
    Grades K-5 Approx. KRW 12,920,000 plus USD 5,830
    Grades 6-8 Approx. KRW 13,740,000 plus USD 6,200.
    Grades 9-12 Approx. KRW 16,460,000 plus USD 7,420
    * The prerequisites that international schools set forth are that you must either;
    (1) hold a valid foreign passport; or
    (2) if a valid Korean passport holder, provide a valid permanent residence visa/card from a foreign country; or
    (3) if a valid Korean passport holder, provide "Certificate of Facts Concerning Entry and Exit" issued by the Seoul Immigration Office proving a minimum total of five years (1,825 days) residence in countries outside of Korea; or
    (4) if a valid Korean passport holder, have one foreign parent with a valid foreign passport or Korean Family Registry indicating previous foreign citizenship.

    Higher Education Institutions

    Also, higher education opportunities are widely available in the Seoul vicinity, which is known to be the location of approximately 72 universities and colleges. For further information regarding foreigner-compatibility, you should contact individual schools.
