SNU Language Education Institute Develops Free App for Learning Korean
September 28, 2013 The SNU Language Education Institute has developed a smartphone application named ‘SNU LEI Hangeul’ for foreigners to learn Korean. Users can practice writing Hangeul and can listen to and repeat Korean pronunciation. Information on this app is available in English, Chinese and Japanese. The app can be downloaded for free at the Android Play Store. more

SNU School of Medicine Imparts Knowledge on Child Heart Surgery to Nepal
September 29, 2013 SNU School of Medicine has invited 8 doctors from Nepal’s Kathmandu School of Medicine to come receive advanced training on surgical practices for child heart operations. The invited doctors will be staying at SNU for 2 months, at the end of which leading professors from the SNU School of Medicine will go to Nepal to provide further education. This exchange is part of the medical support program of the J.W. Lee Center for Global Medicine. more
Professor PARK Chongwoo Inventing Robots Which Imitate Human Motion
October 1, 2013 Professor Frank Chongwoo PARK of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering said in an interview that the ‘age of robots’ will come soon enough. Robots these days can perform programmed acts and can adapt to certain new environments using equations, but he is working on developing robots that can imitate human behavior by observation, in which case, there is no need to program every single act that a robot can do. Last year, the robot ‘Baxter’, which can mimic human behavior, came out in markets, and Professor Park believes that if this kind of robot can improve in speed, it will become more commercialized. more
SNU to Start Using Plagiarism Detection Program ‘Turnitin’
October 2, 2013 Starting in 2014, SNU will start using ‘Turnitin’, an academic plagiarism detector with a database of over 280 million student papers and 134 million academic journals. When the user enters a paper in Turnitin, it runs an automatic check and colors the parts which may have been plagiarized. SNU has had trouble with plagiarism in the past with the Dr. Woo Suk HWANG scandal in 2005 and Professor Soo Kyung KANG last year. SNU expressed hopes that this measure will enhance the research ethics of SNU members. more
SNU Ranked 44th in the 2013-2014 Times Higher Education Rankings
SNU Ranked 44th in the 2013-2014 Times Higher Education Rankings
October 3, 2013 SNU was ranked 44th in this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, up from last year’s ranking at 69th. Other Korean universities that made it to the top 200 are KAIST at 56th, POSTECH at 60th and Yonsei University at 190th. The highest ranking Asian universities were Tokyo University at 23rd and the National University of Singapore at 26th. THE rankings are based on teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. more
