SNU Professor Develops Fluorescent Nanoparticle
November 6, 2013 Professor Chong Rae PARK of the SNU College of Materials Science and Engineering has developed a fluorescent nanoparticle which, by responding to light, can be turned on and off. Professor Park believes this can be applied to medical tasks such as diagnosing target organs and cancer cells. The research team used macromolecules which show high rates of permeability even in non-transparent human cells. When this nanoparticle was injected into a mouse which was later exposed to ultraviolet rays, its sentinel node showed clear fluorescent response. The newly developed nanoparticle showed a much higher sensitivity rate than previous nanoparticles, with the fluorescent response showing in the target area only. The details of this research were published in the October 18 publication of Advanced Materials. more
