Professor KIM Jin-Soo Enhances the Accuracy of RNA Genome Engineering
November 20, 2013 Professor Kim Jin-Soo of the SNU Department of Chemistry has developed a new technology which enhances the accuracy of RNA genome engineering. Professor Kim’s new RNA-guided endonucleases (RGENs) do not affect similar DNA sequences and respond only to the target DNA sequence. RGENs, which enable targeted genome engineering in cells and organisms, were originally a product of Professor Kim’s research. But previous RGENs also responded to similar DNA sequences, with a possible result of virulence or chromosome deformation. Professor Kim added two guanine nucleotides in front of the guide RNA to prevent them from activating in similar DNA sequences. The new technology is expected to significantly reduce side effects in genome or stem cell medical care. more
