SNU Professor Develops Insulator Film Which Allows Electric Current Flow
December 1, 2013 Professor Taek Dong CHUNG of the Department of Chemistry and Professor PARK Young June of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering have developed a technology which allows electric current to flow when a thin film of silicon dioxide is subject to certain conditions. Silicon dioxide is an insulator which does not convey heat or electricity and so was not used as an electrode. However, the research team took note that a proton can penetrate silicon dioxide films. When electricity was applied to a silicon electrode dipped in acidic solution, hydrogen ions from the solution moved inside the silicon dioxide film and made electricity flow. The research team believes this can be used to produce silicon dioxide film much more economically. This research was published in the November 12 edition of Nature Science online. more

IMF Managing Director Lagarde Gives a Lecture at SNU
December 5, 2013 Christine Lagarde, the IMF’s first female managing director, gave a lecture at SNU Graduate School of International Studies on Dec 5. Ms. Lagarde said that the 21C will be focused on Asia, and about 80 percent of foreign investors say that they concentrate their investments in Asia. Though Korea has potential, Ms. Lagarde pointed out that Korea’s biggest problem is population aging, and if this cannot be solved, Korea’s economic growth rate will drop to 2% by the year 2025. She added that among OECD countries, Korea has the largest wage discrepancy between male and female workers and the lowest rate of females in administrative positions, and that fixing this is of critical importance to Korea’s long-term growth. more
