Professor HEO SeongDo to Retire Next Month
January 11, 2014 Professor Heo SeongDo (Department of Chinese and Chinese Literature), who made a digital archive of Korean historical texts, will retire next month. He started out as a Chinese major, thinking that to decipher Korean historical texts, a thorough knowledge of Chinese is mandatory. In 1980 he became a professor and started raising funds to create a digital archive. He manually typed and created digital fonts for over 15,000 Chinese characters from such texts as the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and Donguibogam, among others. Professor Heo made this archive public and further translated The Chronicles of Three States. Later he began delivering public lectures to recruit potential scholars in Korean history. On his imminent retirement, he stated that there are no regrets, and he is excited to start a new chapter of his life. more

Professor SONG Junho Accepts New Position at SNU
January 13, 2014 Professor Junho Song, previously a tenured professor of engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has returned to SNU (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering), his alma mater. He completed his undergraduate and master’s degrees at SNU, went on to receive his doctorate degree from UC Berkeley, and was a member of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign faculty for 8 years. However, when SNU approached him as part of a young scholar scouting program, he agreed to return so that he could mentor students of his homeland. Professor Song’s main areas of study are structural reliability and engineering risk and uncertainty which allow people to make risk-informed decisions. “It is lamentable that Koreans tend to forget quickly about the hazard of big disasters” he mentioned, reminding “we need consistent investment in and research on engineering.” more

Study on Graphene by SNU Professors Published in Nature Communications
January 21, 2014 Professors Euijoon YOON and Gun-Do LEE of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, in a joint research project with the University of Oxford, confirmed the existence of hydrogen free graphene edges which will increase the number of ways to utilize graphene. Graphene is a conductive 2-dimensional, crystalline allotrope of carbon. However, unnecessary elements tend to adhere to graphene edges which undermine its conductivity. With hydrogen free graphene edges, scientists can attach the elements they need right away without first eliminating unwanted elements. This study was funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea and was published in the January 2014 edition of Nature Communications. more
