Professor KIM Hyosoo Discovers Receptor Which Controls Obesity
Professor KIM Hyosoo Discovers Receptor Which Controls Obesity
March 17, 2014 Professor Hyosoo Kim of SNU Hospital discovered the key receptor which controls obesity and its working mechanism. Professor Kim found the ‘CAP1’ protein to combine with resistin hormones and induce obesity, atherosclerosis and diabetes. Resistin hormones are secreted from fat cells, especially when high calorie food intake is high. He found, through animal testing, that when CAP1 protein is controlled, chronic inflammation by resistin is suppressed and obesity can be controlled. This research is expected to contribute greatly to the future prevention of obesity and development of a cure for lifestyle related disease such as atherosclerosis and diabetes. more

Professor Vic Narry KIM Selected as Cover Article for Molecular Cell
March 19, 2014 The RNA research team of the Institute of Basic Science led by Professor Vic Narry KIM (Department of Biological Sciences) developed ‘TAIL-seq’, a technology to read the type and length of the adenine tail in the last part of messenger RNA. Messenger RNA conveys the genetic information stored in the DNA to protein cells, and the adenine tail is a base sequence at the end of the messenger RNA which protects the messenger RNA and promotes protein synthesis. The research team first used Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), then re-analyzed the fluorescent signals derived from NGS employing the machine studying method and succeeded in measuring the exact length of the adenine tail. This research was published as the cover article of the March 20 edition of Molecular Cell. more

Professor Jin-Soo KIM Appointed New Director at Institute of Basic Science (IBS)
March 20, 2014 The Institute of Basic Science announced that it is appointing Professor Jin-Soo Kim (Department of Chemistry) as a new research center director. Professor Kim was unanimously selected as the new director by the IBS Selection and Evaluation Committee. He will lead the Center of Genome Engineering and focus on developing genome engineering technology and enzymes for humans, animals and plants. The center also plans to undertake research in applied science areas such as genome therapy and treatment. Professor Kim completed his undergraduate studies at SNU and received his doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. more
