Professor Seung Bum PARK Develops New FITGE
Professor Seung Bum PARK Develops New FITGE
April 9, 2014 Professor Seung Bum PARK (Department of Chemistry) has developed a more effective FITGE (fluorescence difference in two-dimensional gel electrophoresis) technology to observe interactions between proteins and small molecules in an intact cellular environment. Professor PARK already developed the discovery and target identification of anti-proliferative agents in living cells using FITGE two years ago. This time, he found a more effective way of detecting target proteins, developing a method of FITGE which directly infiltrates cells and snatches the exact target proteins which have remedial effect. This technology can be applied to develop medicine with minimal side effects. Professor Park’s research was published as the cover article of Angewandte Chemie International Edition’s April 4 online edition. more

SNU Participates in Government’s College of Engineering Reform Policy
April 10, 2014 The government’s College of Engineering Innovation Committee announced its plan to hire and evaluate professors based on industry performance and encourage engineering professors to spend their sabbatical years in companies. Professor LEE Joon Sik (Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) said that “it will be possible to become an engineering professor without an SCI paper if a candidate’s industry performance is good enough.” This reform policy is in response to criticisms from companies that the gap between the realities of working in industry and engineering education provided by universities is too wide. The government and SNU hope that these measures will strengthen ties between the industrial technology field and academic field. more

College of Natural Sciences Building to Be Rebuilt in State-of-the-Art Manner
April 13, 2014 The College of Natural Sciences has decided to rebuild its 40-year-old building which has been the concern of many regarding its safety. Building no. 26 will be torn down soon, and a new building 6200 square meters will be constructed by the year 2016 to accommodate modern science labs. The new labs will be used primarily by freshmen and sophomores in the Colleges of Natural Sciences, Engineering and Medicine for their introductory science classes. It will also have TEAL (Technology-Enabled Active Learning) facilities which are used in MIT physics classes. An estimated amount of 13,000,000,000 KRW is reserved for the cost of the construction. more
