SNU Opens Seoul National University UTokyo Office
April 14, 2014 SNU and the University of Tokyo have agreed to open offices on each other’s campuses to strengthen academic exchange. President OH YeonCheon attended the ‘SNU UTokyo Office Opening Ceremony’ held April 14 at the University of Tokyo. New exchange programs such as UT in Seoul were proposed, along with joint classes, jointly developed courses and an expansion in graduate school dual degree programs. The University of Tokyo’s SNU office will open soon in Building No. 153 on the Gwanak Campus. The offices are a result of last year’s joint meeting between the two schools to foster cooperation in education and research. more

SNU Opens Protein Metabolism Research Center
April 17, 2014 SNU School of Medicine has opened a research center to support collaborative efforts in protein metabolism research by SNU professors and other scholars at home and abroad. The center aims to conduct basic research in protein metabolism and determine its relevance in connection with disease, ultimately developing cures for related diseases. The new center will be run primarily by Professors Aaron Ciechanover and Avram Hershko who were co-awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004 for their work on protein metabolism. At the opening ceremony, Professor Aaron Ciechanover also gave a special lecture. more

April 21, 2014 Professor JHE Wonho (Department of Physics and Astronomy) has discovered the mechanism of titanium dioxide’s superhydrophilicity. When superhydrophilic material absorbs light, water dropped onto it does not form waterdrops, but instead spreads out widely. Professor Jhe observed titanium dioxide through a self-developed scanning probe microscope and found that when titanium dioxide absorbed visible rays and near-infrared rays, it created electrons on the surface. These electrons and water molecules in the air combine and form an adsorptive film which pulls water so strongly it results in superhydrophilicity. Professor Jhe expects that this discovery can be used in the development of windows which are practically waterproof. The specifics of this research were published in the April 7 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. more
