SNU Professor Develops Next Generation Lithium Secondary Cell Battery
SNU Professor Develops Next Generation Lithium Secondary Cell Battery
April 26, 2014 Professor KANG Kisuk of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has developed original technology for the production of next generation lithium secondary cell batteries along with KAIST and the Agency for Defense Development. Lithium secondary cell batteries have until now not been possible to produce in high volumes as they cause environmental harm upon production as well as their recycling. In response to this, the research team used organic material to create nanostructures to produce green energy lithium secondary battery cells. “Instead of using heavy, poisonous transition metal, body-derived organic material can be used to store up high levels of energy very fast,” said Professor Kang. “In the future I expect we can make ‘bio batteries’ -- batteries with electrodes made entirely of organic material.” This development was published in the April 23 edition of Advanced Materials. more

Professor OH Se Jung Ranked Highest in SNU Presidential Candidates’ Policy Evaluation
April 28, 2014 Professor OH Se Jung (College of Engineering) was ranked highest in the SNU Presidential Election Candidate Policy Evaluation held April 25. This evaluation is based upon the response from 244 arbitrarily selected faculty members. The standards of evaluation were whether the policies are realistic (40%), vision and leadership (40%) and international outlook (20%). Professor Oh, who promised the foundation of a policy research center and the introduction of a self-regulating faculty evaluation system, received a score in the upper twenties out of a total of 40 points. The final decision on who will be SNU’s next president will be made in June by the Board of Directors. more

Professor KIM Youn Sang Develops Technology to Turn Water Drops into Electricity
April 29, 2014 Professor Youn Sang KIM of the Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology (GSCST) has developed a transparent element which generates enough electricity to light an LED when it touches water. When a water drop touches the surface of an object with electric charge, a change in the object’s electric charge occurs. Professor Kim succeeded in turning this change into electric energy, generating as much as 0.42㎿ per water drop. The possibility of such electricity generation has been proposed before, but scholars did not give much weight to the thought as most believed only a minimal amount of energy could be produced. Professor Kim’s work has significantly increased the amount of energy that may potentially be generated. This development was introduced in the April 24 edition of the Washington Post. more
