Professor Fouser Chooses to Live in a Traditional Korean House
April 24, 2014 An article was written about Professor Robert J. Fouser (Department of Korean Language Education) and his choice to live in a traditional Korean house (hanok). Professor Fouser, who originally studied Japanese at the University of Michigan, took an interest in Korean during his visit to the country in 1983. Afterwards he taught Korean and English in Japan for 13 years. In 2008, he moved to Seoul and started lecturing at SNU on teaching the Korean language, and three years later he acquired his hanok. When asked why he chose to live in a hanok, he said that he liked the style and layout of the hanok itself, a house with a garden and good lighting. He added that “living in a hanok is a rebellion against the homogeneity of Korean society. It symbolizes that I choose to live differently from all that which is considered ‘the norm’.” more

SNU CARFRE Selected as a Leading Engineering Research Center by the Ministry of Education
April 25, 2014 The SNU Center for Advanced Research in Fusion Reactor Engineering (CARFRE) has been designated one of the leading engineering research centers in the country by the Ministry of Education. CARFRE, which opened in 2008, has received a total of 8,000,000,000 KRW from the government in research funds during the last seven years. CARFRE’s aim is to develop critical technology needed to create nuclear fusion reactors. Its current research topics include fusion reactor plasma diagnosis using a self-created tokamak fusion test reactor. A joint research project with the SNU Department of Nuclear Engineering on the effect of nuclear fusion neutrons on materials is also ongoing. CARFRE’s success is in part due to continuous funding of 33,000,000,000 KRW a year, which most university research labs find hard to obtain. more
