Event: 2014 SNU-LG Press Fellowship
Date: 11:00, September 15 (Mon), 2014
Venue: Maronie, Hoam Faculty House

Distinguished guests, participating fellows, and ladies and gentlemen.

I would like to extend my hearty congratulations to all of those who have been part of the SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program.

This year, eight leading journalists from around the world are participating in the program. I sincerely welcome all of you to Korea and to Seoul National University. I would also like to express my gratitude to LG Sangnam Press Foundation, which has continuously supported this program from the beginning, and to Dr. Choo Kwang Yung, who has, as its founding director, made this program a success since its inception.

This program, I firmly believe, can contribute greatly in the era of internationalization. Advanced communication technologies have turned our world into a global village. Ideas and information are being exchanged among countries instantaneously, and, consequently, the importance of mutual understanding and cooperation among nations becomes ever greater than before. Nothing is more imperative, at this point in time, than a concerted effort to build and nurture international cooperation for humanity as a whole.

The role of journalists in each country in this era of rapid global transition, therefore, is of vital importance. The press in each nation is a window to the world through which its people can see and understand the world beyond their borders. Journalists in each nation have the tremendous responsibility of presenting their people with a true picture of the world, with the highest objectivity and integrity.

The SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program intends to contribute to this objective by providing an opportunity to journalists from around the world to learn about and discuss significant issues facing the global community in this critical era. I hope that you will freely exchange diverse ideas for resolving the worldwide challenges and threats we face. It also is my wish that this program will build bridges between countries to promote better understanding and trust, thus contributing to the advancement of world peace.

Once again, I would like to thank Dr. Choo and the staff members of the LG Sangnam Press Foundation as well as our Institute of Communication Research. I hope every fellow will have a very enjoyable stay in Korea and sincerely wish another big success of the SNU-LG Press Fellowship Program.

Thank you.
