The Social Science Korea International Conference Series

Event: The Social Science Korea International Conference Series
Date: 09:30, October 24 (Fri), 2014
Venue: Youngone Hall, Asia Center

Good morning, distinguished scholars and guests. Welcome to Seoul National University on this fine autumn day.

It is a great pleasure and honor for me, on behalf of Seoul National University, to congratulate the success of International Conference organized by Korean Social Science Research Council, and sponsored by the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and the National Research Foundation of Korea.

The Korean Social Science Research Council, as an umbrella organization for 15 academic associations in the Social Sciences, has led multi-disciplinary collaborations and produced valuable academic outcomes. Today’s conference is a clear example of such a multi-disciplinary collaboration where sociologists, historians, political scientists, and economists share and exchange their ideas and opinions. The topic of the conference, “East Asia and Future Korea in the Gobo Year: 1894 and 2014”, is also very timely, because Korean society is now disclosing many problems as a result of its compressed modernization and thus needs to reflect on past modernization and its relation with the future of Korea.

Seoul National University, as a leading university in Korea, has fostered intellectual collaboration and international academic exchanges. I believe that this conference is one of the most successful international conferences in terms of academic excellence as well as in practical policy implications. In this regard, I would like to congratulate Dr. Hyun-Chin Lim, the President of the Korean Social Science Council on his wonderful organization of this Conference.

Once again, I heartily welcome you all to Seoul National University and hope that you will enjoy the conference, and the beautiful colors of the leaves on the campus. Thank you.
