Professor CHOI Mansoo (Department of Mechanical Engineering) has developed a highly acute sensor which was inspired by the lyriform organ located in spider legs. The lyriform organ has slits of differing lengths which helps spiders detect prey. Professor Choi tried to replicate this organ using thin platinum-coated polymer. He developed a highly flexible sensor which is 100 to 1000 times more sensitive than the current best commercially available sensor. Professor Choi stated that the new sensor can detect voices and can be attached to human skin to detect physiological changes in the human body. The research was featured in multiple international media including New York Times, BBC News, and Science AAAS.
