Prof. Kang Kyungsun's Finding on Buerger's Disease

Adult Stem Cells, Effective in Treating"Buerger's Disease"
Professor Kang Kyung Sun's Staff Publishes Thesis in"Stem Cells" Magazine

Professor Kang Kyung Sun's(College of Veterinary Medicine) research staff, along with the stem cell research industry Histostem, Hanyang University's College of Medicine, and the Catholic University of Korea's College of Medicine, declared on the 2nd of this month that as a result of transplanting stem cells extracted from adult stem cells(blood from the umbilical cord) that passed the histocompatibility test(HLA) into four patients of Buerger's Disease, they found that it is effective in treating ischemic pain and necrotizing skin. These research results were published in the latest issue of stem cell journal"Stem Cells".
Buerger's Disease, known to be caused mainly by smoking, is a fatal disease that results in the necrosis of the feet and toes due to an inflammation blocking the minute arteries of the feet. It has been conjectured that there are approximately 40,000 patients in Korea.
In their thesis, the research team announced that one patient experienced the full restoration of his thumb which had been wasting away just four weeks into the stem cell treatment, and another patient pronounced that his blocked arteries were unclogged four weeks after beginning treatment. In the case of another patient, the disease has not relapsed even though it has been two years and eight months since receiving treatment.
