SNU to Establish ‘School of Liberal Arts’

Seoul National University (SNU) is planning to establish a new ‘School of Liberal Arts’.

Students in the School will choose their major two or three years after their entrance, allowing them the chance to encounter a variety of fields of study.

During their freshman and sophomore years, Liberal Arts students will be able to take liberal arts courses.

Then they may concentrate on classes within their major beginning from their third year.
However, Liberal Arts students cannot choose medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, or nursing as their major.

The University will admit 157 CLA freshmen for the 2009 academic year.
The University will first select among the candidates 2-3 times the number of students than the quota, based on students’ application forms and GPAs, after which they must pass an interview process and essay writing test to gain admission.

Korean and foreign students who have graduated from high school outside Korea by February 2009 are also eligible to apply.

The application process for such students, however, will differ from Special Admission for Foreigners in that the same interview and essay writing test will be given to both Korean and foreign students, and both will be in conducted in Korean.
