Professor Eunju Lee, Inaugurated as the President of the International Communication Association (ICA)

Dr Eunju Lee, a professor of the Department of Communication within the College of Social Sciences at Seoul National University has been inaugurated as the first Korean president of the International Communication Association (ICA). The ICA is a prestigious association representing the field of journalism and communication studies, with over 6,500 members from 80 countries. Established in 1950, ICA is widely recognized as the most prestigious association in the field. This past May, Professor Lee took office during the ICA 73rd Annual Conference held in Toronto, Canada, from the 25th to 29th, under the theme of "Reclaiming Authenticity in Communication." The United Nations has officially acknowledged the ICA as a non-governmental organization since 2003.

Professor Lee's election as president followed her success as the President-Elect-Select of all full membership votes in 2021, making her the first Asian female scholar to hold this position. She is a globally renowned researcher in the field of media psychology, focusing on exploring the personal and social effects of various forms of digital communication. Her research has shed light on significant social phenomena, such as news comments and public opinion, social media use and mental health, misinformation and correction, and human-AI communication.

Notably, Professor Lee is the only Korean scholar to have served as the Regional Director of ICA East Asia (2009-2012) and as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the esteemed academic journal 'Media Psychology.' She is also the first scholar who is speaks English as a foreign language to have held the position of Editor-in-Chief (2017-2020) of 'Human Communication Research,' one of the top three esteemed academic journals in the field. In recognition of her contributions, she was honored as an ICA Fellow in 2019, the highest recognition for a scholar in the field of journalism and communication studies.
